What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a common form of restorative dental care designed to save a tooth that has been damaged from the inside out. The procedure becomes necessary when the centre of the tooth, known as the pulp, becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, cracks, or injury.

The most common symptoms of damaged pulp include persistent tooth pain, swelling, or a warm sensation in the gums. The affected tooth may also become highly sensitive to hot and cold temperatures.

Severe tooth pain can make everyday activities like eating or talking uncomfortable, and if left untreated, the infection may lead to abscesses or further complications. That’s why it’s important to see your dentist promptly if you experience these symptoms.

By performing a root canal, your dentist can remove the infected tissue, relieve discomfort, and restore your tooth’s health and function. In many cases, this treatment can preserve your natural tooth and prevent the need for extraction.

Endodontic Specialists for Trail Patients

When specialized care is required, we refer patients to endodontists for root canal therapy and advanced endodontic treatment.

The Root Canal Procedure

Dentists typically complete a root canal treatment over two appointments.

First Appointment

The dentist will create a tiny access hole in the upper part of the tooth. Various files will be used to find the canals and sterilize the dead (necrotic) pulp tissue to eliminate the tooth's infection.

A temporary filling is applied to seal the upper part of the tooth. Depending on the severity of the infection, your dentist may prescribe antibiotics.

Second Appointment

At your second appointment, the small access hole will be opened again, and your dentist will file and sterilize the tooth once more. The canals will be filled with a special filling material to replace the tooth's nerve.

A permanent filling will be used to seal the tooth.

The Benefits of a Root Canal

Do you have a toothache or other painful symptoms? If so, your tooth may be infected. Your dentist can help alleviate pain, prevent the infection from spreading, and help you avoid an extraction by performing a root canal.

Many patients who need to come in for a root canal at Trail Family Dental are relieved to learn they should not experience much pain or discomfort following the procedure.

Additionally, your tooth will be functional once more, and you should be able to eat and smile properly again in no time.
